Prop. 50 Disinformation

Many of us recently received a flyer in the mail from the “Protect the Voters FIRST Act” about California’s redistricting plan to thwart the Republican takeover of our Congress in 2026.

The flyer is misleading.  As usual, the Republicans are up to their dirty tricks. Two important things to know about this flyer:

1) On the front, there is a quote from the Sacramento Bee implying that the League of Women Voters of California is against Proposition 50, the proposed redistricting plan.

That is not the case.  The League of Women Voters of California has put an “IMPORTANT NOTICE” on the first page of their website:

“You may have received a mailer from ‘Protect Voters First’ about the redistricting ballot initiative this November…[that] implies that the League of Women Voters of California is part of their coalition and endorses the information contained in the flyer.  This implication is not correct–we are not part of that coalition.  The League of Women Voters of California did not authorize this action.”

2) This flyer was paid for by Charles T. Munger, Jr. who is a republican and the son of a billionaire.  California law requires that information about who is funding political advertisements be clearly evident on the ad itself.  You will note that on the bottom of the last page of this flyer there is a text box in which it clearly states that this ad was funded by Charles T. Munger, Jr.

The "Protect the Voters FIRST Act" flyer was in our mailboxes two days after California passed the legislation needed in order for Proposition 50 to be on the November 2025 ballot.  The Republicans want us to vote no on Proposition 50 but we need to vote YES so we can thwart the authoritarian takeover of our government.

PLEASE NOTE: Prop 50 is temporary and expires in 2030. It is a specific response to the Texas redistricting.
